Domain takedown

A domain takedown is the process of getting a fraudulent or infringing domain deactivated or removed by the parties that control it: the registrar, the hosting provider, or the registry.

How it works

A takedown starts with evidence: screenshots, WHOIS and DNS records, and proof that the domain abuses your brand or hosts malicious content such as phishing or malware. That evidence goes to the abuse contact of the registrar, host, or registry, which can suspend the domain or pull the content.

Every provider has its own abuse policy and response time, so success depends on reaching the right contact, citing the right basis (ICANN rules, registry terms, or local law), and following up until the domain is offline.

How it relates to brand impersonation

Lookalike and impersonating domains are the launchpad for most brand-impersonation attacks. Phishing pages, fake shops, and spoofed login portals all need a domain to live on. Taking the domain down removes the attacker infrastructure, not just a single page.

How nebty helps

nebty runs domain takedowns on demand, with no subscription, and bills on success: if we do not get the domain removed, you pay nothing. We handle the full process, from evidence collection to coordinating with the registrar and host, and we add the domain to relevant blacklists.

We are a European, GDPR-aligned provider built for SMEs, so you get professional takedowns without an annual contract.

What affects how fast a domain comes down

Takedown speed depends less on the threat itself than on where it lives. A responsive registrar in a cooperative jurisdiction can act within hours; one that ignores abuse mail, or sits in a region with weak enforcement, can drag a case out for weeks. Evidence quality matters too: a report with clear screenshots, headers, and a cited policy gets actioned faster than a bare complaint. Sites behind bulletproof hosting or a reverse proxy add a step, because you have to reach the provider hiding the real host first. Repeat offenders often rotate to a fresh domain the moment one drops, which is why a takedown works best paired with monitoring that catches the next registration early.
